One of the many beauties and challenges of wine is how circumstances will pop up that test your knowledge. From simple assessments of a familiar wine to the far more difficult task of assessing that taste from left field. In a faraway country where you are facing a masked line up of local wines how can you make sense of the wines. The sum of what you know is likely limited to what you have learnt in your local environment. This creates a preconceived view, and the test is adjusting to the new challenge. You may do OK but be on guard as measuring the unfamiliar against what you know may not turn out well. Start with the one great truism of tasting, focus on what is good in the glass not what you wish to it be. If the wines are outside your bank of knowledge come to that conclusion and pass no comment. Which brings us to the Eden Valley. The type regions for Riesling are in Europe in places like the Rhine Valley, Alsace and Austria. The climate of Australia is different so they should not be compared to those ‘type regions’. Judge them for what they are.
