The pick of the best Barossa end up as Karrawirra Single Vineyard bottlings. We have a vintage when exceptional vineyards are identified and then a row of vintages when we are less certain of this special character.
The last releases were from 2015, though on reflection I now believe several wines from 2016 made the grade. While a good vintage, 2017 is not a keeper so it is with some relief to find that a few parcels from 2018 are worthy of offering as Single Vineyard wines.
Fine Barossa reds have a strong appeal in Australia yet almost no following Internationally. Wines from Penfolds and Henschke are seen as collectables while a few others have gained modest recognition as being exceptional.
In the main the Barossa is way short of the prestige shown to the best of France and the district is light years away from being recognised for example as the ‘Bordeaux-Barossa’ Classified Growths of Australia. This means the pick of the crop each vintage are still modestly priced and the best are worth collecting as they will keep for decades.
