Charles Flaxman was granted land covering the future village of Tanunda on 30th May, 1842. Flaxman had worked as an agent for George Fife Angas for a number of years, surveying land acquired by Angas. He laid out the town of Tanunda and at its centre a square known as Ziegenmarkt, later referred to as billy goat square and now known as Goat Square. The two settlements that pre-date Tanunda are Bethany (1842) and Langmeil (1843) and it is said they used to trade livestock and farm goods at the site of Goat Square. Old colonial houses still exist on the four corners.
The First Goat Square was the Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2003 and was depicted in a newsletter mail out in 2006. This would have been a Rolf Binder wine.
