In the early 1980s James Halliday began his long association with the Australian newspaper with a weekly wine column. He retired last month with the final article devoted to the Eden Valley winery Henschke. Indeed, he noted that over his 42 years he had written 12 articles about Henschke wines. Good publicity for Henschke yet over this period myself and other retailers have had a hard battle moving customers across to the delights of Eden Valley wines.
Alas no rub off at all from the Henschke aura. Indeed the medium sized company Tollana battled for a few decades with a range of Eden Valley wines, most with numerous show awards. Yet try as I did, with effusive recommendations, customers were not moved and Tollana has slipped into obscurity.
I have a simple view. Good wine will sell and since the Eden Valley lacks appeal that’s where the bargains will be found. Over the last three years Glug has made connections with several boutique Eden Valley wineries and now take any surplus they offer. This Glug Vine to Glass is a ‘one off’ being sourced from one of our connections. Customers will be rewarded.
