The palates of wine drinkers have matured steadily over the last 20 years. The approval given to hundreds of boutique makers and new districts has enriched the whole industry particularly in the way it has created wine tourism which brings consumers out amongst the vineyards. With this has come the long-awaited acceptance of different varieties with two heritage Barossa Valley varieties, Grenache and Mataro now on the table. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, being significant warm climate varieties, belong together and while blends began to appear in the early 1990s it is only in recent years that Grenache has appeared as a stand-alone variety. Many Barossa Valley wineries now have a vintage release of Grenache with Shiraz and Cabernet. Barossa Grenache has been promoted by Glug since 2004 and various blends have been made since 2005. The first Bengalee Grenache was the 2012 released in May, 2013. There has been a release most vintages since. We seek to bring out the serious side of Grenache, a substantial full flavoured expression such as we seek with our Shiraz.
