This style of wine is what we wished to make when coming to the Barossa. This is achieved by using simple wine making methods, summed up as pick, ferment in small open fermenters, settle and age in old, oak puncheons.

The reasons why the Barossa is associated with rich flavours is complex though is due to the geography, the inland summer heat and cooling air from the west. We now know enough to say that no other place on earth duplicates these conditions. Shiraz takes on a concentrated, heady flavour, with a luxurious mid-palate sensation of fruit sweetness.

  • Oakley Adams McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

  • P. B. Burgoyne Eden Valley Shiraz 2022

    $13.60

There are some fabulous vineyard clusters and those developed by the Henschke family at Keyneton illustrate the wine quality that can be achieved. The origin of the Burgoyne Shiraz is from the low Eden Valley where the reds are plumper than the far cooler high Eden. Still the low parts of the Eden Valley are one hundred or more metres higher than the Barossa Valley so expect a Shiraz that highlights different flavour aspects.

  • Glug ‘North Block’ Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022

    $14.60

The point of Barossa Shiraz is its unique depth and ripeness. Pale, delicate and light has its place as does a wine like this which is the opposite. Look for an intense depth of ‘sweetness’ along the mid palate which is a feature that seems to be unique to the Barossa Valley. I hasten to add the wine is dry its just that the taste appears as described.

  • Hopcroft & Cornock McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

Adelaide Hills vineyards are small and variable. A bit of good ground here and a further tiny parcel over the hill crest. Pocket handkerchief vineyards. Less common is exposure to the summer heat which ripens Shiraz and this ‘Sunday Drive’ we found irresistible and so purchased from a small garagiste maker. Cool climate though in the style of Eden Valley.
