Smart winemakers, better vineyard management, means the fruit is turned into the best wines the Barossa Valley has ever made. Importantly it is the volume of high quality that is now produced which is astonishing. At times I would like more pressings on the back palate to increase the length and improve the ageing ability. Still most want to drink wine earlier which is our advice and of course no one has a cellar these days so how do you age wines for 20 years under cold conditions. The tannins you need for age take at least a decade to soften. This no longer works in our modern lifestyle. So with some regrets I say this remarkable Shiraz is a compromise. I prefer drinking it before 2030 as we have knocked back the tannic antioxidants for softness and earlier drinking. The high alcohol will act as a preservative so this style of wine will not just roll over a die. I assure you a young juicy Tasmanian Pinot Noir will.
