All drinkers have a need for that small batch, inexpensive wine for occasions when the cellar of premiums should not be raided. Plenty of times we like to have a glass in hand when doing busy jobs and simply do not have a moment to reflect on the wine. This is the time to open a Quaffing Dry Red (QDR).

How you measure a wine business is most often done by reviewing the premium wines or most expensive wines they make. Glug disagrees as the real measure is the ability to make wines which have an individual taste and do not cost much. We call them QDR’s which is shorthand for quaffing dry reds, a Glug specialty.

All drinkers have a need for that small batch, inexpensive wine for occasions when the cellar of premiums should not be raided. Plenty of times we like to have a glass in hand when doing busy jobs and simply do not have a moment to reflect on the wine. This is the time to open a QDR.

The best were the first Orlando Jacobs Creek, the 1973 released in 1976 and the response by Penfolds with the Koonunga Hill 1976 in 1978 produced at a time when red wines were hard to sell as drinkers preferred white wines. Together they altered our perception of how good wines could be for a low price. Glug does not make large volumes of wine, most being well under 100 cases. In this way our QDR’s are handcrafted from a base of the major variety which is adjusted with wines from premium regions. Duplicating the pioneering QDR’s with exceptional value is the aim of the Farmers and Growers range which also includes The Smithy and the Wheatsheaf.
