Our winemakers have been experimenting with Barossa blends since the start of Glug in 2004, though in a more detailed manner since 2010. These evolved into Trial Bins and the best have been bottled since 2016.
The Three Hares developed from these Trials and focusses on blends of the three Barossa Valley heritage varieties of Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz.
It has been apparent since at least the 1940s that the fruit intensity and complex flavours that develop in a suite of varieties is unique to the Barossa Valley.
Blends termed GSMs made from Grenache Shiraz and Mataro began to appear in liquor stores in the late 1980s and as a distinctive judging class from the late 1990s. GSM’s are now seen as an important Barossa style and are made by many wineries both in the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Clare Valley.
