Mataro has arrived, it only took 180 years but what a journey.
While a few favourite varieties still dominate our drinking the growing experience of consumers and a desire to broaden the tasting experience has seen a few dozen newly introduced varieties gain acceptance over the last 20 years.
For some of us this was disappointing as it seemed the two heritage varieties that were planted at the start of the Australian wine journey, Grenache and Mataro, would miss out yet again, swamped by this youth. Instead both have been pushed forward by groups of enthusiasts with Grenache the first to cross the acceptance line with Mataro now gamely pushing at the finishing tape.
Glug is a huge supporter of Mataro so please join us and place a bottle on the dinner table. The best choice to start with is Mataro from the Barossa Valley.
