The wines of P.B. Burgoyne can be sourced from anywhere in South Australia as we use the Burgoyne brand as that of the old-time roving wine merchant.
Burgoyne would be pleased with this McLaren Vale Cabernet as he began his career importing McLaren Vale wines for his London business in the 1870s.
Australian wines were seen as ‘shockingly different’ to the English taste, which was trained on reds from France, particularly Claret from Bordeaux. Customers used to austere, thinner often green wines, the product of a much cooler climate, we instead offered robust reds which Burgoyne called ‘tonic wines’. Indeed, he offered them as medicinal wines to build body strength.
We hope Peter Bond Burgoyne would be pleased with our interpretation from 2016 of his love for reds from McLaren Vale.
