The art of making great budget wines begins with the creation of the base wine, which for the Blockies is Shiraz. By blending components, a full flavoured character can be built which lifts the quality above its price point. This wine will surprise the doubters. Big companies offering wines under $10 start with a huge undefined base. By blending in additions, the results are pretty good considering the volumes they make.
The advantage of Glug is we use small batch winemaking across all our price points. In any year we purchase exceptional lots of Shiraz from many districts. With the base in place, we went to work and added other components. Since the first wine in 2007, the finishing touch to Blockies has come from the use of high-quality Mataro. We believe Mataro is the best all-purpose variety to use when adjusting the wine flavours of warm climate reds. Incidentally Mataro has no role of course in making cool climate reds. Thus, the back palate lift comes from the addition of about 15%, high quality Barossa Valley Mataro. The result is as good as the first we made in 2007.
