The Grandma Raethel wines are our tribute to the large number of German settlers that selected the Barossa Valley as their new home. They were partly inspired by the desire for religious freedom. The Raethels arrived in 1845. The German community was large enough to support a German language newspaper The Australische Zeitung, a weekly, which was initially published in Tanunda, Barossa Valley in 1860.
The Barossa wines you purchase make only passing reference to this rich Barossa German heritage and Glug believes this should be more prominent. The Grandma wines were some of the first we bottled back in 2004 though they are only made when the vintage is favourable. They are released when ready to drink though the maturation must take place in the barrel not the bottle.
There is no specific sub district selected for the Grandma wines, rather they are the best of the barrels.
