France and many European countries do not mention the variety on the label. For them wine is about the location. Perhaps this is why it took so long to recognise that Grenache vines, some 100 years old existed in the Barossa, yet till this decade it was difficult to buy a Barossa Grenache. The point being when buying we look for confirmation to give us confidence.
What does Grenache mean? The famous French wines from the Rhone Valley made from Grenache are labelled Chateauneuf du Pape and had they mentioned Grenache I’m sure we would have been enjoying Australian versions by the 1980s. Why, because the best of the French are very expensive, thus confirming the local version was worth a try. It turns out many are far better.
Grenache has been promoted by Glug since our start, part of our mission, and samples now being offered to us have moved from curios to wines rivalling the best made anywhere around the Globe.
