There remains an ancient Cabernet vineyard in the north-western corner of the Barossa Valley. This is owned by Penfolds and is called Block 42 and depending on the source dates to 1892 or 1888. We know Cabernet vines came to Australia in the 1830s so small patches were planted.

Australians though did not drink wine, preferring beer, spirits and fortifieds so when the table wine began from the 1950s the Worlds most popular table wine variety Cabernet Sauvignon barely existed. Plantings began in the Barossa Valley in the 1980s and 1990s though Barossa Cabernet has not gained the fame of places like Margaret River and the Yarra Valley.

Recall that Cabernet is associated with the famous French region of Bordeaux which is maritime or cool climate so Cabernet expansion was designed to emulate these great wines in Australia.
