Many Glug labels record Australian wine history, and the Auld and Burton wine merchant partnership was active back in the 1860s and 1870s. We use Auld and Burton for wines we discover anywhere along the Adelaidean Mount Lofty Range of South Australia and in this way is a true, wine merchants brand. This means the wines were not made by us from grapes but purchased in barrel quantities from small makers we admire.
The first release was the Auld and Burton Clare Valley Shiraz 2008. Over the years I have been asked why we have so many brands and the reason is because we bottle all wines in small batch lots to preserve the difference. Many releases are a single barrel or a combination of two or three barrels. This compares to big company blends of +50,000 cases which are the norm and this far exceeds our total bottlings. This keeps us interested and we hope adds excitement for customers.
At Glug, wines come and go quickly. Here we have used two varieties from two regions in various proportions. I find more Clare in the final blend than Barossa so look for a touch less heat and higher altitude flavours. Finally explaining the Clare flavours continues to defy me.
