Glug ‘Closing Time’ Barossa Valley Fine Old Tawny Port NV

Australians turned away from after dinner drinks in the 1980s. Long established wineries had built up large stocks of ports and other fortified wines, sherries and muscats, over many decades, even 50 years, for a market they never saw ending. The older the better as the aged flavours were so intense, spectacular is a better word, they never doubted sales would go on forever. Well, sales stopped, like hitting a brick wall. This was a grave mistake of those that enjoy wine. What can replace the magnificence of these mature cellared giants?  Yes the table wines improved and are now world class but measured next to these they are simple reds and whites. Nothing equals the flavours of a 50 year old tawny port or Muscat.
