I’m not sure which grape variety has the most names though all have a few depending upon the history of the variety and the spread of the variety to other countries. Primitivo is the same as Zinfandel and the identification of the parent with DNA analysis is a wonderful story. The origin of Primitivo is Croatia where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski. It became fashionable in U.S. and my first introduction to the variety came via the U.S, trained wine maker David Hohnen.
The variety is known as Zinfandel in the U.S. I recall David planted Zinfandel at Cape Mentelle in W.A. The variety is popular in Southern Italy where it is called Primitivo and we choose that name as we like the ‘Italian’ taste or palate feel of this wine.
Glug are supporters of growers and makers of lesser known varieties because in the long run we know our customers will enjoy their drinking from widening their choice. We added Shiraz for additional strength.
