Mataro was one of the foundation varieties of the Barossa Valley. As the age of fortified wines faded during the 1950s-1960s so did the price for Mataro. The transition to table wines was bumpy swinging from red wines to sparkling wines and white wines back to red wines to the relatively stable mix we have today. Mataro though sat unloved Australia wide and tragically in the South Australia vine pull scheme of the 1980s many hectares of rare old vines Barossa Mataro was lost. Yet it is one of the classical warm climate varieties and is now a fundamental variety held in high regard by all Barossa wine makers.
Kym worked with Rolf Binder, a noted expert with Mataro, for a number of years and it was natural that Kym would release his own. His first 100% Mataro I recall was the 2006 vintage and this has evolved into the Dog Strangler the name being an anglicised version of the French term for Mataro, Estrangle Chien.
