The first Red Barn was a Barossa Shiraz Cabernet 2008 and there have been many since. The idea is to provide the best value Barossa Valley wine possible and because of this Red Barns are blends from many sub-regions and at times may include Eden Valley wines. It is this flexibility which allows us to contain costs. In this case a blend of Shiraz from many sources was made more interesting by adding Mataro.
For fifty years Barossa winemakers have been adding Mataro to Shiraz because it works. Ten to twenty percent Mataro adds a great deal of complexity to Shiraz and lengthens the palate. Indeed a dab of Barossa Mataro finds its way into many of the reds we make. We thank our customers for approving of Mataro as this heritage variety must be saved.
