Part of the Glug mission has been to promote the two Barossa heritage varieties Mataro and Grenache. Both varieties are well regarded in Europe yet enquiries from the mid-1970s till the late 1980s asking Barossa Valley wine companies for samples did not turn up a single example. At this time, I was not aware that the Barossa winery Veritas (later Rolf Binder Wines) had made trials of a Mataro they called Bulls Blood from the 1960s. This family I later learnt owned a few acres of bush vine Mataro planted in the early 1890s.
It was not until the early 1990s that a wave of youthful winemakers, including Rolf Binder and Charles Melton, began creating Grenache and Mataro wines and various blends from each vintage. So, to offer a collection of Barossa Valley Mataro from many different makers gives Glug great pleasure.
Please note you will not discover a strikingly different taste as the Barossa Valley climate leaves the biggest impression on all wines regardless of the variety. Close your eyes and many you will swear are Shiraz.
