What a remarkable wine journey the country has travelled from the 1950s. Those with knowledge of wine, like the Wine and Food Society supporters of the 1940s, began the push, other foodies joined in as did immigrants from the 1950s. So, by the time Orlando Barossa Pearl was ready for the 1956 Olympics it was apparent a new taste journey was underway.
The wine awakening continued and now reaches all corners. Part of this 70-year long story has seen the planting of over 50 varieties not available in the 1950s. Some have only a tiny appeal while others like Prosecco have shot to fame. Many will not gain popularity though note that this is not from the taste but from people being people since we all develop likes and dislikes for no apparent reason.
Glug likes varieties which offer our customers a slight shift in taste. Even better is when a small winery has made more than can be sold allowing us to purchase at keen prices. Hence, after a taste we had no hesitation purchasing the few barrels of this delicious Nero D’Avola, surplus to this tiny winery.
