Region: Eden Valley, South Australia
While the Eden Valley vineyards of Pewsey Vale date back to the 1860s, with the exception of Henschke, the Eden Valley has not won favour with consumers.
In my shop retailing days we tried hard to lift the profile of Tollana Eden Valley, yet even though the wines were at good prices they did not sell. As well a highly rated boutique like Mountadam with gold medals and trophies and a great story was simply too hard to bother promoting.
Eden Valley is noted for Rieslings yet even these were a tough sell. This taught me that much more than quality was needed to create consumer appeal for any wine region.
The Glug view is to buy good wine wherever it is from, which brings us to this exceptional Montepulciano which we purchased from an artisan.
Many younger winemakers have set up in the Adelaide Hills but only a few have ventured further east to the drier and slightly lower region of Eden Valley. The wines we are seeing are magnificent and customers will be astonished and impressed by this strong, rich red.
Incidentally if you are thinking about moving and having a different life the Eden Valley towns of Springton, Eden Valley and Mount Pleasant offer great appeal.
