This is the final bottling of three interesting Grenache Trial blends which examined differences of Grenache from various growers and makers. And note we did not make these wines. I concluded they were about equal since they reflect the opinions and techniques of different makers. By this I mean being different does not qualify on my card for being better.
Not long-ago Barossa Grenache had no following so it is pleasing that advanced drinkers now realise the wonder of the Barossa expands far beyond Shiraz. Varieties such as Grenache and Mataro were included in large blends from the 1950s yet this was seldom mentioned on the label.
The change in status of these lesser varieties to equals gives me much pleasure. While valuable vine stock has been lost to various vine pull schemes and growers being fed up with lower grape payments the future looks better.
The increasing interest in wine equates with the strong move away from buying the same wine every time a sure sign of the national palate maturing. Ultimately customers drive what happens in the winery so your adventures with wine are most important.
