There is lookout in the Clare Valley that is a must visit if your interest is to understand why Clare wines are different. The Spring Gully lookout views west and your sight passes over the upper gulf country and well beyond letting your imagination take you far across the Nullarbor Plain. The prevailing weather comes from this direction though sweeps up from the Great Southern Ocean the generator of the Roaring Forties, the Furious Fifties and the Screaming Sixties. Combine this with the elevation of the Clare wine district and add in weather that brings the heat of the inland south, and you have a mix of elements ripening the grapes that creates unusual and magnificent flavours. In this way the Cabernet has a minty Clare twist to the flavour and a depth of colour like no other Cabernet region. With the rise of many other regions from Margaret River to Mudgee-Orange and the Yarra Valley the wines of Clare have been neglected by consumers. Our advice is have another look.
