$35.90The rare and wonderful comes from the Barossa Valley. Within the best Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache those with a top palate can identify wines that have an edge over all the others. This Rara Avis, the fifth we have made since 2004, is our best Shiraz from 2022. Will keep for a long time though even the best we prefer to see consumed at a younger age.

$13.60There are some fabulous vineyard clusters and those developed by the Henschke family at Keyneton illustrate the wine quality that can be achieved. The origin of the Burgoyne Shiraz is from the low Eden Valley where the reds are plumper than the far cooler high Eden. Still the low parts of the Eden Valley are one hundred or more metres higher than the Barossa Valley so expect a Shiraz that highlights different flavour aspects.

Glug ‘Sunday Drive’ Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2023
$14.60Adelaide Hills vineyards are small and variable. A bit of good ground here and a further tiny parcel over the hill crest. Pocket handkerchief vineyards. Less common is exposure to the summer heat which ripens Shiraz and this ‘Sunday Drive’ we found irresistible and so purchased from a small garagiste maker. Cool climate though in the style of Eden Valley.

Halliday published ‘Clare Valley-the history the vignerons and the wines’, in 1985. He devotes a section to Fareham Estate which was founded in 1966.

$11.60Eden Valley is considered a cool climate district. Cool climate districts though are not all the same since coolness can come from elevation or latitude or a combination.
Further variations are created by the closeness to the ocean, being a source of cool air, and rainfall as humidity seems to play a role in creating the taste.

In addition, they show complexity, and it is this combination that has fascinated consumers and winemakers for so long. These flavours play out in the traditional varieties Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and Mataro.
There are other varieties planted, though all in small lots, that have been trialled for several decades and these include, Carignan, Durif, the many Portuguese port varieties, Primitivo or Zinfandel and many others. Auld & Burton Barossa Valley Shiraz Mataro 2014
$12.80The oldest Mataro vines date back to around 1892 though it was a popular variety in previous eras as a productive, non-irrigated bush vine this before the arrival of trellised vine rows and drip irrigation. We do know that the early makers of Barossa Valley Shiraz added 10-15% of Mataro to many blends as they found this added strength and character to the wine. So Mataro was the variety which was never on the label yet was always in red wine.

$13.80The reason there are so many Glug brands is because we prefer to bottle each wine to preserve the difference, however tiny. Overriding all of the small differences is the flavour of the Barossa Valley and the Glug style which favours full flavours. Expect from us a red over 14% alcohol as we are not excited by the flavours of low alcohol reds.
