Where would we be without Barossa Shiraz? Nothing compares as it has no equal geographically yet is not appreciated in global markets. A recent email for a dealer in Germany enquired about supply which made me reflect that when combined with our remarkable German heritage why aren’t Barossa reds the winter-time favourites of Germany. Until the light goes on supplies are ample for the local market and fairly priced.
As a very rough guide to flavour it is worth looking at the alcohol percentage. We do not favour wines of 14% and belong to the school of fully ripe grapes which in this case has pushed the alcohol to 15% which is about normal for a Glug Barossa red.
Wines like this will keep yet age alters flavours and I am not convinced they are for the better. We use light extraction so you do not need time to soften the long tannin molecules which need age to soften. Our first Kitts Creek release goes back to 2008. Alcohol being a measure of flavour ripeness is 14.8%.
