Historically the Barossa Valley was not the place for a thriving community of small wineries. It was the centre of big production facilities taking local grapes and grapes from the Riverland which prior to 1960 were used for the large fortified market.
Flagons of a range of sherries and ports simply disappeared as the table wine business expanded. It was well into the 1990s before small wineries began appearing of the type that had been thriving in McLaren Vale for decades. They have continued to expand in the Barossa and the surrounding range and may now number 100 or so. They have now filled the niche for expensive boutique wines and many make more wine than can be comfortably sold at their rather high prices.
We buy such wines ex barrel and tat is the source of Glug The Regions. These are ‘one off’ wines offering outstanding value and do not have continuity of our established range like Bengalee or Goat Square.
