The first Tumbleweed was made in May 2009 and many have appeared since. The rationale behind Borderland Estate of which Tumbleweed is one brand is to take advantage of the many good quality wines offered which are not of Barossa Valley grade. They are often blends that wineries have accumulated through their bottling cycle from ‘left-overs’.
This 2022 blend came from a winery in the Southern Barossa Valley. While good it is not good enough to be part of our range of premium reds and is priced accordingly. The flavour is enhanced with the addition of viognier a variety favoured in the Northen Rhone Valley of France. This was copied by growers in the Yarra Valley and particularly the Canberra winery Clonakilla which began adding Viognier to Shiraz in the 1970s.
In summary there is no theme behind the Tumbleweed wines, all are different, and all deliver first class value for money.
