Peter Bond Burgoyne began buying McLaren Vale reds and its believed fortifieds for the English market from 1871. He found his market with a full flavoured ripe blend, likely mostly Shiraz, sold in a dumpy squat bottle and labelled as Australian Burgundy. It sold well to a new middle class wine buyer which preferred this taste over the English Claret style from Bordeaux, France, as favoured by the wealthier. Taking this thought and blending three districts with similar tastes is the thinking behind this blend. These wines have been aged in large oak barrels by Glug over many years and parts have been purchased in bulk from other growers. This is an important distinction as the wines were only bottled a few weeks ago. This is the best way to provide mature flavours that are fresh and vibrant.
