• Harem ‘Rosita’ Barossa Valley Rosé (Grenache Mataro) 2022

    $21.00

About this Rosé I said, ‘Forget the insinuation of the pale delicate rusty pink colour, as this is simply very great wine which is fruity, bone dry, bitter-sweet and offers challenges’. Insinuation meaning – because it’s a rosé do not expect a simple, quaffing, sweet style. This comment applies to the remarkable Rosita 2022 which will develop for many years.

  • Oakley Adams Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

    $12.80

Barossa Cabernet that changed perceptions. While tradition says the best Cabernet comes from cool climates, Australia proves otherwise—great Cabernet thrives from the Hunter to Clare, and especially the Barossa. The Oakley Adams release captures this fresh identity: bold, elegant, and proof that if the wine tastes good, you’ve found the right place.

  • Old Moppa Road Barossa Valley Cabernet Merlot 2019

    $14.50

Cabernet makes firm wines and the tannic toughness can get out of control so blending with the soft, fleshiness of Merlot comes naturally.

  • Old Moppa Road Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022

Original price was: $14.50.Current price is: $10.00.

The Barossa Valley is a remarkable wine region to visit. To move from admiring the landscape in the manner of the occasional visitor to having a profound knowledge of the how the landscape evolved (geomorphology) has given me much satisfaction.

I know Old Moppa Road very well. It runs along the western edge of the northern Barossa Valley a location with many old vine vineyards. Alas for this vintage we could not buy grapes from the location we wanted along Old Moppa so moved further north to secure supply.

This vintage was a true Barossa vintage without prolonged hot spells nor unsettling cooler periods. So out of 50 vintages the 2022 would be like about 25 of them. You want to sit with the average not the extremes. Looks good in the glass as I write this note but am wary about long term cellaring.

The wine is rich and deep but all vintages make me cautious as the unexpected can appear as they age, so 10 plus years is not recommended – unless you are happy.

  • Oakley Adams Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2023

Original price was: $12.50.Current price is: $10.00.

There is a central spine of higher ground that runs down Adelaidean Mount Lofty Range and vineyards are planted up to 600 metres. The wines from these vineyards have cool climate flavours because of the altitude. This region east of Adelaide is termed the Adelaide Hills and is the source of this Shiraz. It comes though from lower elevations so tastes like a cool climate Barossan or a wine from Eden Valley.

  • Terrene Estates South Australia Shiraz 2022

  • Barbarossa Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet Durif Mataro 2022

Original price was: $15.80.Current price is: $12.00.

NMD is short for ‘no more details’ and is the game we played with the early releases of the Barbarossa. The name Barbarossa and knowledge that it was 100% Barossa Valley was all customers were told. A real guessing game.

  • Old Moppa Road Barossa Valley Durif Shiraz 2022

Original price was: $14.50.Current price is: $10.00.

My taste for Durif commenced in the late 1970s with trips to Rutherglen where it has historical connections from 1908. No other region grew the variety though later I discovered it was growing at Griffith in the Murray Basin. The climate of Australia is different to Europe, the source of our vine cuttings, and what varieties suit Australia has yet to be decided so I have a hunch Durif will be a big part of our future. This is the variety that should be used to bolster up other varieties when the vintage leaves them weak on flavour.

From 2004 we developed a feel of what we wished to achieve in the Barossa Valley the idea being to work with Shiraz Mataro and Grenache. Durif though was a background thought and circumstances allowed us to begin working with Durif by 2005. Not much was planted yet over the years has expanded. Initially we saw it as a blending option and from 2015 began to think it was worth promoting as a single variety. Good enough for Rutherglen then good enough for the Barossa Valley.

The elevation of the Barossa Valley is 200 to 300 metres while Rutherglen is 175 metres and the two districts are closer than the distant apart and geography would suggest. The final blend was with the natural partner Shiraz since the Barossa makes such high quality Shiraz.

  • Bagot Station Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023

    $13.40

Young reds from the right vintages without hard extract are magnificent. This Bagot reminds me of those deeply coloured and powerful Moulin a Vent-Beaujolais, I imported in the 1970s. Deep in colour, one glass led to another, as did the bottles. How can wine be so pleasant. This vintage produced wines with a pronounced aroma and the winemaker has highlighted this with a light touch in the winery-such as no pressings added back. A must buy though will not evolve into a Karrawirra.
