Do not make a tasting error by overlooking this red. The origin we cannot reveal as it is part of ‘the five star red haul’ we stumbled across a few months ago and a condition of purchase is no publicity. The winery is rated at five stars. With the quality assured I can now justify purchase by pointing out the uniqueness of the Clare Valley. We know that the Clare Valley makes Trophy winning wines yet so do most other regions and districts. The first difference is the location which at 33.83° latitude pushes the Clare into semi-desert country. Instead we have a place which makes delicate Rieslings of a type normally associated with cool regions and this definitely says unique.
I am still puzzled as to why the Clare Valley with this geographical oddness and unique climate makes such beautiful wines. The heat is tempered by the elevation of 350 to 400 metres with some vineyards even higher, similar but different to Eden Valley. The Cabernets often have a minty edge, again more associated with Coonawarra. So here we are, the Clare Valley with its unique location illustrates how versatile the vine and its many varieties alters to suit a wide range of locations, each giving us a further insight.
