In the 1950s to 1970s the word Barossa sold whites and sparkling as well as reds. And so it was Barossa Riesling, Barossa Semillon and Barossa Rose all sold well. Slowly then quickly the fetish was promoted that certain styles, say Chardonnay and Rieslings, were best when sourced from cooler regions.
They are certainly different by emphasising other characters of taste that are less apparent in warm climate grapes. As for better I am less sure as this is best left to the marketplace. Still the opinions of experts has influenced customers, though I wonder if they soon felt too embarrassed to drink warm climate whites.
There is a shift back to a more reasonable position as warm climate whites, particularly roses, which have more flavour, belong in your shopping basket. This Barossa Riesling is an each-way bet showing cool-warm climate features. It is the first we have offered since the retail days of the 1970s. Will age well.
